Chelsea’s friendly games so far have seen a real mix of youngsters, new signings and senior players. The results haven’t been great, but that’s really not the point.
Most fans agree that no conclusions can really be drawn until the Real Sociedad game at home the week before the season starts – and even that will likely have some players getting their first minutes of the season.
Still, Xabi Alonso’s selection in that game will tell us a lot about what his lineup will be the following week.
Jody Morris’s ideal Chelsea team for Fulham on opening day

Jody Morris’ team for Fulham, as put out on Sky Sports today, is very similar to what we expect 90% of Chelsea fans would pick.
It has just one problem – the Enzo Fernandez / Moises Caicedo double pivot has been found out time and time again under a series of managers and in a number of configurations, and many fans are convinced it will never be sufficient in a 4231.
Can Alonso make it work? Possibly. But he’s not going to have Enzo for long on the training pitch to figure it out.
In other news…
Marco Palestra has impressed in preseason so far, and already has the makings of a cult hero about him. He can’t wait to get started in the Premier League.
One teenager who made a big impression on the preseason tour is probably too young for a loan – but that means more training time with Xabi Alonso.
