Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri’s lack of silverware is a minor detail, he’s one of the best

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has never won a trophy in his professional career, as some choose to use as ammunition to discredit him.

Even Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has done it. He’s quoted by the Daily Mail ruing the fact that Sarri was unable to deliver a trophy to the Napoli faithful:

“There remains the pleasure of having played well but also the bitterness of not having won anything. We gave Sarri everything and in three years we didn’t win anything.”

Sarri has arrived at a club where lifting silverware is the expectation. His head will be on the chopping block if he’s unable to deliver it, as many of his predecessors have discovered in the Roman Abramovich era.

What many fail to note is that Sarri’s lack of medals is not a fair reflection of his managerial ability. It’s not for the lack of trying, nor the lack of success he has brought.

Sarri’s Napoli side won 91 points in Serie A last season. In 23 of the last 25 seasons, that would have been enough for them to lift the Scudetto.

Napoli were denied the title by a Juventus side who have won seven titles on the trot – a feat that has never been achieved before.

There’s a real possibility that if Sarri had the financial power at his disposal that Massimiliano Allegri does in Turin, Napoli would be the reigning champions of Italy and Sarri would be hailed for his incredible work.

Don’t discredit him because the t’s were left uncrossed and i’s undotted. He has a far superior squad to work with now. Underestimate him at your peril.

Sarri has a squad of winners. He has a board which will back him in the transfer market. This is the platform he needed to reaffirm his credentials as one of the best managers on the planet.

Once Sarri gets his first trophy under his belt, he will put an end to the criticism. It’s early days in his tenure, but we get the feeling that success is on the horizon.
