Opinion: Billy Gilmour has done more than enough to start in absence of others

I think that too many people are overlooking just how competent Billy Gilmour is as a player.

I assumed that when we saw Mateo Kovacic get injured and others in that role may have needed a rest, Gilmour would have absolutely got a start. But he didn’t, Thomas Tuchel opted to bring Mason Mount into a slightly less familiar role for him instead. I get it, I really do. Mount has played there for England before and done well.

But when you are looking for an all-round comfortable and confident number 6 to slot in and do more than just a job when needed, Gilmour is absolutely your man.

Don’t get me wrong, obviously Tuchel is the one to see them all in training, and he clearly just isn’t fancying Gilmour.

But in my humble opinion, from what I have seen of Gilmour over the last few years watching him religiously and closely, I certainly feel he is more than good enough to be selected as a fourth choice option as one of the double pivots at the ABSOLUTE least.

I’m not trying to criticise Tuchel as a coach, he’s done a fine job since arriving at Stamford Bridge, and for the record, I believe not starting Gilmour against Brighton last week was his first real mistake since arriving. But he will have his reasons, ones that perhaps we will not ever hear in public.

However, for me, Gilmour deserves more trust put in him. He is a player who plays with confidence, calmness, and maturity beyond his years, and he also brings the defensive side and the attacking side to that role, his passing and vision is actually very good, he can be a good creative player, which is something we have been missing from deep.

He will go on loan this summer, absolutely no doubt about it. I hope he gets a good loan and he can shine and eventually come back to Chelsea as the total complete player.
