Opinion: Chelsea will surely have to sell some homegrown players

Chelsea could still face Financial Fair Play issues this summer if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, and there has been some reports floating around suggesting the club are planning a clear-out which could involve selling some homegrown players to boost their FFP position.

Selling homegrown players from Chelsea’s academy works wonders for FFP. This is because these players have not cost Chelsea a penny, and then when they do sell them for a fee, that goes straight back into profit revenue.

For example, if Chelsea sell a Conor Gallagher this summer for say, £40m, all of that goes straight into our profit margins because he didn’t cost us a penny to begin with.

So it’s inevitable that Chelsea will be looking to sell one or two homegrown players this summer, but only players that will be looking to move.

Of course, there is the issue with Mason Mount’s contract right now and a chance a conclusion is not reached here. If it isn’t reached, I can see Chelsea trying to sell this summer to avoid losing him on a free.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is currently on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and things have been going far from great there. He’s one who could be put up for sale in the summer for a good profit.

I can see other players like Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Trevoh Chalobah, and the aforementioned Conor Gallagher all consider moving in the summer.

None of them are going to be regular starters when we have a fully fit squad, and you can’t blame them for wanting to go and play regular football. They could all do a fantastic job at a different club where they are playing more.

Chelsea could get some decent fees for the players above, which will help with FFP. But let’s just hope that the right decisions will be made going forward, and we simply have to get Mount signed to an extension, in my view.
