Opinion: Opportunity to sign one of Europe’s best rising modern day centre back’s too good to miss

None of us expected us to be here right now, right? Getting ready to welcome a new centre back as one of our first summer signings of this transfer window.

Regardless, this is where we are at as Chelsea advance in a deal to sign Sevilla defender, Jules Kounde.

We had always heard that a new centre back could be on the cards for Chelsea this summer dependent on other circumstances, and Kounde was a name who had been linked with us.

However, we all expected a new striker to be one of the first names announced at the club this summer, and although that can still happen, Kounde is the one that looks to be most advanced right now.

But to me, it looks like a case of an opportunity that Chelsea could simply not let pass by.

Kounde was close to joining Tottenham a few weeks ago, but he reportedly wanted to wait and see if any of the ‘big clubs’ made a move to sign him this summer, and it looks like that had alerted Chelsea to make their move.

He is simply just one of those players that if you have a chance to work a deal for him and can sign him for a fee that isn’t ridiculous, and he has basically sent a ‘come and get me’ message, you just have to go for it if you are Chelsea, before one of Europe’s other top clubs move in for him, because he is THAT sought-after.

In fact, according to a report from The Athletic back in March, Manchester City tried to sign him as their first choice centre back target but they had a 55 million euros offer rejected, and then they turned to Ruben Dias instead.

That just proves how highly rated this guy is in world football, and just how much potential he has got and has already shown. The likes of Real Madrid and others have also been interested.

The 22-year old France international is a typical rising modern day centre back, he isn’t the biggest in stature, but athletically he is up there with the best and technically he is a great ball playing defender.

He has the pace, power, and energy to be a great hard-working all round player on the pitch and his ability on the ball has seen him making darting runs up field and out wide, doing all the duties that a new-age centre back enjoys doing.

The type of centre back who would do a great job as an attacking midfielder, that’s how good his ball playing ability is. But not only that, he is a fantastic defender, a real battler, and even though he doesn’t have the height like some defenders, he has taught himself to have a fantastic leap and can get up in the air very impressively to compete in that aspect as well.

If Chelsea pull this off, they have a future world class defender on their hands, one who is versatile and would be a brilliant player for the team on the whole.
