Opinion: Reece James and Mason Mount will emulate same captaincy setup as Terry and Lampard at Chelsea

There are just certain players you look at and watch their rise to the top and you just know that they have that something extra about them.

Not only are Reece James and Mason Mount deeply rooted to Chelsea Football Club coming through the academy since the age of 6, they are just absolutely quality players who get the culture of the club, they get what it means to represent the club, and they get what it means to love and support this club. They are literally one of us.

It would be amazing if you guys subscribed for my project over at Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, where we are putting out so much Chelsea content including DAILY Newsletters, exclusive news, breaking news, Podcasts, interviews, inside information, and bringing in some massive guests!

Right now Chelsea have a couple of good options as their captains, with Cesar Azpilicueta the club captain, and Jorginho as the Vice. But neither are getting any younger and we will soon need to be having the conversation about who will take the reigns.

For me, there is no other option right now than Reece James, he is more than ready for it already, and he is the epitome of ‘being Chelsea’.

His father’s words today made me think that not only is James ready to be our next club captain, he will be exactly that for many many years.

“100 games… you just sit there and think, ‘Wow’. To do that at 21… there are some people who play 300 in their career,” Nigel James told The Athletic.

“But I’m not emotional. The part where I will be emotional is the day he becomes Chelsea captain. That’s his ambition and mine as well.

“Didier Drogba was a legend and so was John Terry. But Reece has been at Chelsea since he was six. There isn’t a player who has been there that young and gone on to wear the armband. The goal is to be the man that, when you hear Chelsea, you think Reece James.”

The words there at the end really resonate with me and they will do with every other single diehard Chelsea fan out there. This is exactly what you want from your club captain.

Mason Mount has more than a valid shout to be the club captain as well, he has that drive, that passion, that desire, that willingness, and a great mentality and attitude, just as Reece has got also.

But for me, Reece just about sticks out as the more viable option purely because he is a true and natural born leader, he will die for this club and leave everything out on the pitch, as will Mason.

I can honestly see these two emulating John Terry and Frank Lampard as the next club captain and vice-captain of our club for many years to come. And what great hands we will be in as Blues fans.
