Opinion: Us fans must lower expectations for Chelsea, for now at least

I’ts rather rich coming from me I know, but I think it is important now for us as supporters of Chelsea to try and maintain a lower level of expectations ahead of matches right now.

This is due to the fact we are without 9 first team players in our squad right now and we cannot expect miracles, especially taking into account the effect the whole Covid situation is having on all of us, as well as the players and staff.

It would be amazing if you guys subscribed for my project over at Si & Dan Talk Chelsea, where we are putting out so much Chelsea content including DAILY Newsletters, exclusive news, breaking news, Podcasts, interviews, inside information, and bringing in some massive guests!

As I said, even I was frustrated after the Wolves game at the weekend and to be honest we ARE in a slump of form, there are no two ways about it. But I think fans like me, we need to reel our emotions in a little bit right now and try and be more open to the general situation that we are in.

Tonight’s game against Brentford can go either way and I am not expecting anything at all. We have probably promoted a handful of U23s to bulk up the squad just to fulfil the fixture, so that is where we are at right now.

I know it’s hard, we are Chelsea and to be honest against Wolves on Sunday we had enough to beat them and we should have beat them. But we were playing unfit and fatigued players, we can’t really get too annoyed by that. I’m an emotional fan like everyone else and we demand a lot from our club and normally I am the first to speak up when I feel standards are slipping. We are a big club and the Champions of Europe so it’s important we always maintain standards and quality on the pitch.

But if there is ever an example of when us fans should let off a little and retreat with such expectations, it is a time when we are missing 9 first team players with Covid-19. It’s very extreme, and we should tailor our views and reactions on the match tonight due to that, in my view anyway.
