It is a debate that I have often changed my opinion on, but it always reverts back to the following conclusion regardless….
Well, to start with, they need to revert to four at the back. This will allow for them to have an extra player playing further forward, and it will still give them the ability to transition with and without the ball, by having a defensive midfielder that can drop in to support the back line.
This brings me to my next thing that they need, a classic-type defensive midfielder, one who is excellent defensively, athletic, quick, good on the ball, but can also contribute in attack. And who on earth would that be I hear you ask? Well, you guys know by now how much I rate Declan Rice, he ticks these boxes. But there are many others as well, Boubacar Kamara of Marseille is very good, and will be a cheap option.
But using a four at the back system will enable Chelsea to play with two strikers, or at least two attackers up top close to each other, and it will put an extra body in the box when they are trying to breakdown congested defensive units, like when Arsenal put 11 players behind the ball for 80 minutes of the match last night and Chelsea could not break them down.
It will also give us more width and an attacking threat with full back overlaps and natural wingers, this will give us the ability to go inside and fire off a shot, or hit the by-line and cross for a striker, which brings me to my next thing we need… A new striker.
But not just any old striker, an elite striker, an all-round striker, one that can do the lot, link-up play, be a strong target man if needed, good in the air, good in the box, strong finisher, and good carrying the ball.
Once again I hear you ask, who is this perfect striker? Well, to be honest, I’m really swaying towards Romelu Lukaku now to do this job; he has it all, and also a great mentality.
Anything else? Yes, one more thing… A new centre back.
This guy NEEDS to be a comfortable and calm ball playing defender, but one who is solid, commanding, has good leadership, experience, and is most of all, a top class defender.
Y’all shouting at me again right? Who? Well, the dream would be Marquinhos from PSG for me, who has been linked and is wanted by Thomas Tuchel, as I told you earlier this week on my personal website here. Either him, or Raphael Varane, who has also been linked to us.
Of course these are not easy deals and will be expensive, but if Chelsea are serious and want to challenge for the Premier League title next season, we need these additions to the core of this team to really put us up there with Manchester City in my opinion, as well as a more progressive and attacking formation switch.
