Striking a fine balance: Chelsea must learn from over-sized squad mistake

It is ALWAYS going to be impossible to keep every single player happy in a squad; this is an issue that even smaller squads will occur.

However, it is always going to be more detrimental the bigger the squad is, and Chelsea made some big mistakes this summer that has just increased the pressure of Frank Lampard even more.

Which players could be leaving Chelsea this month? Find out here!

He has a few players who are unhappy in the camp, thus creating a bit of an atmosphere at times. These are players who are not playing, and feel like they should be playing.

As I said, this is always something you will get and it is up to the manager to deal with this and keep a collective high morale within the squad. But with recent poor form, mixed in with the unhappy players, things have certainly been better at Cobham right now.

Some of this is on the Chelsea board. They should never have started this season with five first team centre backs competing for two starting spots, or three left backs competing for one spot – this was ALWAYS going to end in disaster.

Whilst it is good to rotate and keep a decent sized squad, the more players you have who are not playing, the more likely you are to see players causing unrest. It needs to be kept to a minimum, whilst always ensuring you have a competitive squad, because competition is positive.

This is why it is essential to strike that balance.

Chelsea would have sold/loaned a few more players in the summer, but they were holding out for better deals when perhaps they probably should have accepted the deals they had on the table, especially if it was a loan deal.

Yes they may not be getting the best immediate financial result out of it, but surely in the long run it is better for a player to be out playing and keeping and hopefully increasing their value, rather than them to not be playing at all and losing value and match fitness?

This is something that the club needs to be on top of moving forward and has not helped Lampard’s situation. Let’s hope they don’t make the same mistake twice, this month!
