Gareth Southgate is the latest big name to be linked with the Chelsea job, and while he understandably has denied those links, it’s easy to see why the people upstairs at the club would be tempted to pursue the England boss.
Beyond just organising the team and getting them to function with a clear pattern of play very quickly as he has done, his ability in front of the cameras is a massive plus. Maybe it’s just having the rather awkward and timid Maurizio Sarri as boss that makes Southgate’s steely decorum more desirable from this perspective, but whatever the cause it’s clear that figures upstairs at Chelsea must be craving a return to a more slick, media trained gaffer.
If you can turn around the atmosphere surrounding England, maybe the most toxic media environment out there, you could surely do a job at Chelsea too.
We can’t see any universe where Southgate gives up the job before the Euros at very least, but we can definitely see the fact he’s being linked with us (as you can see here at the Independent) signalling that we’d like to move back to a more modern type of coach.
