Despite a good start to the 2017/18 campaign, the fact remains that Chelsea fell short in the summer transfer window.
Alvaro Morata, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Danny Drinkwater, Davide Zappacosta and Willy Caballero were all drafted in, but only Zappacosta was an actual addition to the squad, the rest were rather replacing outgoing players.
With the long and treacherous campaign that lies ahead, Antonio Conte may still be looking to strengthen his squad, and he may be able to do so without paying a penny. Here’s three free agents that could improve Chelsea’s squad.
Jan Kirchhoff
There can be no denying that he failed to impress during his time at Sunderland, but Kirchhoff has top level experience with both Bayern Munich and Schalke. At 26-years-old, his best years are still ahead of him and he would be able to provide cover at both centre-back and defensive midfield. It would be somewhat of a wildcard signing, but could prove to be a good one.
Giuseppe Rossi
Antonio Conte may have neglected to call-up Rossi during his time with the Italian national team, but the 30-year-old would, at the time of writing, improve his Chelsea squad. The Blues have just two strikers following the departure of Loic Remy to Las Palmas, and Rossi has proven himself able to find the back of the net at the top level.
Bacary Sagna
Having been released by Manchester City earlier in the summer, Sagna finds himself without a club. The 34-year-old has made 266 appearances in the Premier League, as well as accumulating 65 caps for the France national side. Sagna could provide cover at both wing-back and centre-back, and his experience could be invaluable for a squad who recently lost their captain and leader.
