Chelsea have been the big winners of the summer transfer window so far and they are now many people’s dark horses to win the Premier League title this season.
Frank Lampard led the Blues back to the Champions League with a fourth-placed finish last season but he knew there was plenty of work to be done on the squad as they finished a whopping 33 points adrift of champions Liverpool.
It won’t be easy to make-up that sort of gap but Chelsea bosses can’t be criticised for a lack of trying as they’ve backed Lampard in the marker by splashing out huge money to bring in a number of top class signings this summer.
Winger Hakim Ziyech has arrived from Ajax and he’ll be a real threat in the final third while Chelsea won the race to sign highly-rated German international striker Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.
Chelsea also needed to overhaul their defence and Lampard has spent big money on left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester City while experienced centre-back Thiago Silva has also arrived on a free transfer from PSG.
However, perhaps the most significant signing Chelsea will make is the £90m capture of Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting young talents in world football and it’s a real coup that Chelsea have snapped him up.
Manchester City are the bookmakers 8/11 favourites to win the title this season with current champions Liverpool a close second at odds of 2/1. Chelsea are most bookies third favourites and you can get odds of 11/1 on the Blues finishing top of the table next May. Man Utd are just behind Chelsea at 12/1.
Based on those odds it’s going to be a two-horse race this year but I actually think Chelsea look incredible value at 11/1 given how much they’ve strengthen this summer compared to their rivals. If you agree, you can bet on football here and snap-up those 11/1 odds before they shorten.
Lack of activity
None of Chelsea’s main rivals have made significant additions to their squads in the way Chelsea have as it’s been a subdued transfer window with very little activity so far. Man Utd have signed Donny van de Beek, City have signed Nathan Ake and Liverpool haven’t signed a single new player.
Chelsea in comparison have been the big movers in the market with a number of top class signings so there is no doubt they’ve closed the gap on the three teams who finished above them last season.
Lampard has strengthened in the key areas he needed to improve. He needed a new world class frontman and now he’s got one in Werner. Ziyech and Havertz replace Pedro and Willian. Chilwell is a big upgrade on Marcos Alonso at left-back and Silva will tighten up their leaky back four.
Chelsea are now reportedly looking to bring in a new goalkeeper during the final weeks of the window and if they are successful, I think they’re the dark horses for the title this season and odds of 11/1 look excellent value.
