Timo Werner is the latest addition to Chelsea from the Bundesliga. He is undoubtedly one of the brightest young strikers in Europe expected to give the Blues a lift next season. Werner is not the first footballer to be signed from Bundesliga and certainly not the last.
Let us take a sneak peak at the players the blues have signed from the German top flight and how they fared on.
Timo Werner is the latest addition to Lampard’s team that did admirably well in his first season. The German scored 28 goals in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig last season but it has been years of stellar performances from the striker in the past few seasons. He has been on the radar of many top clubs in Europe but finally agreed on personal terms to join the Blues.
He has since joined his new team with a lot expected in the new season. He will be joined by the likes of Hakim Ziyech as the blues seek to reclaim the title from Liverpool who won their first title since 1990.
Chelsea splashed 4 million euros to sign the then 21-year old Baba Rahman from FC Augsburg in 2016. The Blues had high hopes in the promising Ghanaian player but he fell short of the club’s expectations in the first team, making just twenty-three appearances in his first season at the club. Although Baba Rahman is still in Chelsea, he has spent three seasons on loan at Schalke 04, Reims and Mallorca.
As a promising talent, Schurrle was signed from Bayer Leverkusen in 2013. He stayed in Chelsea for two seasons where he showed signs of top quality at times. Unfortunately, he failed to cement his place in the first team. He was eventually sold to Wolfsburg by the then manager Jose Mourinho. After a brief spell there he was sold to Dortmund where he couldn’t break to the first team. He has spent the past two seasons on loan to Fulham and Spartak Moscow.
Marko Marin is another of the German players that Chelsea signed from Werder Bremen in 2013. The move turned out to be a poor signing as Marin played only 16 times during his stay in Chelsea. He was out of the club on loan for a total of four times and later left on a permanent move to Olympiacos. Marin now turns out for Al-Ahli.
Chelsea signed one of the best players in Pizzaro from Bayern Munich in 2007. It turned out a bad move as his stay at Chelsea lasted for just one season. Known as one of the finest strikers in the Bundesliga, he performed below the expectations, scoring just twice in 32 appearances in the 2007/2008 season. He went back to ‘home’ in the Bundesliga where he found joy again with Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen. He retired after the 2019/2020 season leaving a mark as one of the best strikers ever in world football!
Like many players on this list, the dutchman didn’t get a foothold at Chelsea in his short stint. He was signed in From Hamburg in 2006 and only made 20 appearances before his exit to Stuttgart The “Cannibal” eventually retired in 2015 with Feyenoord as his last club.
Michael Ballack joined the Blues from Bayern Munich in 2006. He is arguably the best signing Chelsea has ever made from Bundesliga. During the 166 appearances that he made, Ballack scored 25 goals and was part of the team that won the EPL title in 2009/2010 season. The German icon also had a wonderful career with the national team, Bayern Munich along with two spells with Bayer Leverkusen where he retired in 2012.
Sebastian was the first-ever player to be signed by Chelsea from the Bundesliga. He joined the Blues in 2000 for a free transfer from Frankfurt. But, he hardly made an appearance for Chelsea during his first team.
In 2005, he left for SV Wacker Burghausen. He would later move to Fortuna Dusseldorf after a two-year stint. Sebastian later returned to English football with AFC Wimbledon shortly before retiring with SV Heimstetten in 2013.
Christian Pulisic joined Borussia Dortmund in 2019 on a fee of 58 million euros as a replacement to Eden Hazard. He has had a mixed first season in London but the future looks bright for the American. A lot of it has been down to injuries but whenever he has featured, he has certainly shown a lot of quality!
In the Abramovich era, Chelsea have been signing the best players from Bundesliga. Some have made great impressions while others have fallen short of the club’s expectations. Only time will tell if Timo Werner can showcase the quality he has shown so far in the Bundesliga.
