Xabi Alonso has made an admission about Chelsea’s midfield situation and the rumours that they had looked at free agents to come in.

The embargoed section of Xabi Alonso’s press conference this week had some really interesting answers about Chelsea’s midfield situation.
Moises Caicedo is out injured and Enzo Fernandez left on deadline day. Meanwhile the club weren’t able to pull off a move for Lamine Camara in time. That’s meant Chelsea are a little short in the middle right now, and there were rumours that the Blues had contacted free agents after the deadline. Alonso, surprisingly, admitted they were true.
Alonso admits Chelsea considered emergency tactic
“No [we won’t add any free agents],” Alonso said, before admitting:
“Well, we have looked. But no.”
The midfield issue came into sharp focus at the weekend when Arsenal started walking all over us in the middle of the pitch, and Alonso only had right back Malo Gusto to turn to.
It’s quite the admission that the club were considering the panic option of signing a veteran just to help cover. They decided against it, and Alonso was on board with that:
“I’m happy, and we need to deal with injuries but once we have all the players, many important players back, I think that we will be able to take a step forward.!
In other news…
Caicedo’s injury is what is stretching our midfield depth right now, and we did at least get some detail on his problem from Alonso in the same presser.
Alonso also gave some comfort to Estevao, who will have been disappointed by the number of Premier League minutes he’s had so far this season.
