Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rejects Chelsea move

Oxlade-Chamberlain

Chelsea were close to signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has rejected a move to Chelsea, according to BBC Sport.

As per BBC Sport, the two clubs reached a £40M agreement for the transfer of Oxlade-Chamberlain, but the player has not given his go-ahead to the deal.

BBC Sport claim that Oxlade-Chamberlain does in fact want to join Chelsea’s direct rivals Liverpool, and appears to be holding out for the Reds to lodge a concrete proposal.

The reasoning, according to BBC Sport, is that Oxlade-Chamberain believes that Chelsea would field him at right-wing-back, whereas his main reason for pushing to leave Arsenal in the first place was to secure a midfield role elsewhere.

BBC Sport report that Liverpool are expected to bid for the England international in the coming days. If they are unable to agree a fee with Arsenal in the manner in which Chelsea did, he will likely leave next summer on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract.
