And there you have it. David Ornstein has confirmed it – Manchester City have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernandez. The price is £125m, matching the British transfer record.
The Argentine will now complete a medical and sign his Man City contract to make the move before tonight’s deadline. It ends a saga which began way back in March when the midfielder started openly flirting with the idea of leaving Chelsea.
In the end he didn’t get the Real Madrid move he wanted, but he had burned sufficient bridges that he wanted to go anyway. Chelsea held firm, and even set a deadline for bids which City ignored, knowing that if they eventually came back with a big enough offer, the Blues would be compelled to listen.
Chelsea get great deal – but left short in the middle

It’s a good deal for Chelsea, who get a vast fee for a player who was pushing to leave. But it does leave them short a key player without much time to replace him. So far attempts to sign Manu Kone and Lamine Camara have led to nothing, and as it stands it’s going to be a tough season in the middle of the pitch.
