Chelsea abandon pursuit of Southampton defender

Virgil Van Dijk

Southampton's Virgil Van Dijk is considered among the best defenders in the Premier League.

Chelsea are no longer interested in signing Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk, according to the London Evening Standard.

As per the London Evening Standard, the Premier League champions are optimistic that three or four new signings will arrive before the end of the summer transfer window, but van Dijk will not be one of them.

The London Evening Standard believe that van Dijk was top of Chelsea’s transfer wish-list to strengthen their back-line, but decided to end their interest after Southampton insisted that he was not for sale.

It is reported by the London Evening Standard that Chelsea feel as though the signing of Antonio Rudiger from AS Roma and the return of Andreas Christensen from his two-year loan stint at Borussia Monchengladbach will prove to be sufficient defensive reinforcements.

The London Evening Standard claim that Chelsea will instead target signings at wing-back, midfield and in attack, which looks to be a sensible move.
