Information about Chelsea interest in Rayo Vallecano full back Pep Chavarria came from nowhere – and disappeared almost as fast.
What sounded like very spurious rumours were soon backed up by top sources including Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs a week ago. But since then, there’s been silence.
Chelsea to return with further offers for experienced full back
In Spain however, they’re talking about the deal as all but done. A piece in Madrid based newspaper AS today discusses Rayo’s need for a left back this summer, taking it as read that “strong interest” from Chelsea in Chavarria will inevitably lead to a deal at some point.
They note that the first offer from the Blues was rejected, but given new manager Xabi Alonso has specifically requested the 28 year old, and given how much the player wants the move himself, that offer “won’t be the last.”
It’s been a slow summer overall – the sale of our main left back Marc Cucurella and the purchase of Marco Palestra are the only confirmed transfers so far,. Things need to get moving soon, with preseason starting later this week. Locking down the Chavarria deal would be a good next step as we start the long road to the start of next season.
