Chelsea have today emerged as the surprise favourite to sign Karim Alajbegovic from Bayer Leverkusen.

Sam Wallace at the Daily Telegraph doesn’t get many exclusives, so when he does we tend to pay attention. His piece about Alajbegovic claims that the 18 year old winger is potentially on his way to Stamford Bridge after impressing for Bosnia and Herzegovina at the World Cup this summer.

Wallace points out that there are other teams interested in the Bayer Leverkusen winger, but he makes Chelsea “the most likely to do the deal.” He also notes that new Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso was at Leverkusen when Alajbegovic was coming through the academy.

The departure of Alejandro Garnacho to Aston Villa has created some space for a new attacker, although with the likes of Morgan Rogers and Geovany already having been signed this summer, it’s going to be a tough battle for minutes.

That has led some to speculate that Alajbegovic could be loaned out to Strasbourg to develop, or that we could see another wing option (Jamie Gittens, for example) loaned. Time will tell what the Blues’ plans actually are.

In other news…

Tens of millions of pounds have already been spent by Chelsea over a succession of summers. – we really hope they’ve got it straight now.

Garnacho’s deal was given the “here we go” treatment by Fabrizio Romano earlier today, concluding a move that developed very rapidly through the start of this week.
