Exclusive claims Chelsea new midfielder target gets green light from Xabi Alonso

Martin Zubimendi is a Chelsea target according to recent rumours, with Xabi Alonso pushing for the Arsenal midfielder.

Jordan Henderson has signed for Chelsea, adding another central midfielder to an already healthy collection.

But the situation around Enzo Fernandez, who pushed hard for a move away from the club and has yet to return to training after the World Cup, means that there’s a sense hanging over this team that there could yet be an important starting role to fill this summer.

If Enzo does go, there are rumours that new manager Xabi Alonso has already picked out his replacement. CaughtOffside today report that Alonso has “communicated a possible interest in signing Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi.”

Arsenal’s midfield moves could leave Zubimendi available to Blues

It’s an ambitious move, for sure. But given Zubimendi ended up not being first choice for Arsenal last season, it seems more than possible they would listen to offers for him, even after just a year. The Gunners look like they’re finally going to get the signing of Bruno Guimaraes over the line too, which will make them even more likely to sell.

Now 27, the former Real Sociedad man knows Alonso well, and apparently has been suggested by his fellow Basque.

In other news…

There are two Chelsea players missing from the squad to face Juventus today, and while it’s not time to panic yet, we’re hoping for more positive news at the weekend.

David Ornstein has reported that Chelsea are “close” to finalising a deal for Pep Chavarria, with the club in “amicable” talks with Rayo Vallecano.
