With Morgan Rogers secured as the big attacking signing of the summer, Chelsea are now looking to their defence for improvements. The number one target, the player we’re hearing most about in the last few weeks, is Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace.
The Frenchman has emerged as one of the Premier League’s top defenders in his age group, and a really interesting piece from Sky Sports today looks at his strengths and weaknesses.
Lacroix has the full skillset needed to succeed at Chelsea

Adam Bate notes that Chelsea haven’t paid a transfer fee for a player over 26 since 2022 – but claims that Lacroix “is a player worth relaxing the policy for.”
The defender was clocked in the top 5 fastest centre backs in the league over the last two seasons. He’s also 6’4 and a robust presence. Without doubt, the physical tools are all there. He can be “trusted to defend high and low,” and is more than good enough on the ball.
Bate also looks at his steady personality, his strong family background, and his developing leadership skills since Marc Guehi left Palace for Man City in January.
He looks like he’s got everything Chelsea want – and it’s just a question of how much money Palace want for him. We expect them to drive a hard bargain, but we also expect Chelsea to get their man in the end.
In other news…
Chelsea’s main midfield targets are clear – but there’s another big name who could come into the picture.
Two clubs could still make Enzo Fernandez’s dreams come true by getting him out of Chelsea, according to a recent exclusive.
