As the bulk of the first team reach Chelsea’s preseason tour in Asia, the first phase of the summer programme is over. The first couple of games saw lots of academy youngsters used, and while some are staying to make up the numbers in training, others are heading home, in many cases to sort out loans for the season to come.
Nizaar Kinsella’s piece for the BBC today outlines the club’s plans for a few of them.
Chelsea set for fresh wave of academy talents sent on loan
Reggie Walsh and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen have both made their first team debuts in competitive games and look ready for senior action somewhere. Kinsella says they are “weighing up their loan options.”
Portsmouth are rumoured to be close to signing 17 year old Kavuma-McQueen, and we’d imagine a Championship move for Walsh is also possible.
Meanwhile the older and more experienced Shim Mheuka, Ishe Samuels Smith and Omari Kellyman will also be looking for moves away in the weeks to come. Again, competitive Championship teams are probably the sweet spot in terms of guaranteed minutes weighed against level of football.
In other news…
There’s a slim chance Chelsea sign yet another defender this month, although it will take multiple outgoing players according to Ben Jacobs.
Chelsea would also consider adding a new attacker if there are sufficient sales – but it seems even more unlikely than a defensive addition at this point.
