All summer we’ve heard that Chelsea are happy with their goalkeeper options, with Robert Sanchez keeping the number one shirt and young Mike Penders learning from the bench.
But today Matt Law has the exclusive report that the Blues have ripped up their plan and decided to sign Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez on a two year deal for a fee of £7.5m.
Chelsea change goalkeeper plans after Alonso pressure

In the end it really felt like that one mistake from Sanchez against Fulham on Monday night was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Years of mistakes and shaky performances meant he was always on thin ice, and clearly in this case Xabi Alonso has put some pressure on the sporting directors to change their plan to keep him as the number one for now.
It’s not a moment too soon. Martinez may not be at his peak anymore, but for £7.5m we’d be crazy to not roll the dice on a player who could be the difference in a few game this season.
