Nizaar Kinsella claims Aston Villa made “enquiry” for Chelsea attacker in Rogers talks

Chelsea and Aston Villa have done some mutually beneficial dealings before – and could repeat the trick this window.

The £117m deal for Chelsea to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa which David Ornstein announced last night surprised everyone.

We all knew Villa would aim to get that sort of money for their star attacker – we just didn’t think anyone would pay it. Lots of Chelsea fans are despairing at how the sporting directors have blown their whole summer budget on one player. But there’s also a conspiracy theory which aims to explain the fee.

There’s a theory that Chelsea and Villa could be doing a “plusvalenza” deal, where each sign a player from each other at in inflated fee, in a move which helps both teams with their PSR and FFP requirements. We saw Omari Kellyman and Ian Maatsen move between the two clubs a couple of years ago in such a deal.

So with Rogers signed for £117m – let’s call it £30m overvalued – could we see a Chelsea player go the other way for an equally inflated fee? One option who would surely be considered is Nicolas Jackson. He’s up for sale (at the right price), knows Unai Emery from their time at Villareal, and would probably be happy to leave Chelsea for Champions League football.

BBC reporter Nizaar Kinsella today confirmed that Villa made an enquiry for Jackson during the Rogers talks. Could this whisper be the start of something bigger?

In other news…

Alejandro Garnacho is another player who has been linked to Villa, and one we could very much see making a move later this summer.

Chelsea have finally made a “formal offer” for their first choice defender target in the window, but there is a threat from Arsenal, who are now also in the market for a player at the back.
