Chelsea’s attempts to sign Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano have been dragging on for more than a month now.
It all looked at first like an easy deal to do – Chavarria is a 28 year old playing for Rayo Vallecano, not a superstar at a mega-club.
But Rayo have been stubborn, and continue to hold out for a good fee. The good news is that progress has been made, and today a report from the legendary David Ornstein writes for the Athletic today that Chelsea are “close to finalising an agreement” for the left back.
Rayo and Chelsea remain “amicable” despite protracted negotiations over defender
Personal terms have long been agreed, and he is soon to be given permission to undergo a medical, as clubs “work amicably” towards completing the deal.
There is no indication of what the fee will be. Initial reports claimed Chelsea wanted to pay just €15m, but the fact that there’s still no deal a month later probably indicates numbers have gone up to €25m or beyond at this point.
It’s time to get this one over the line.
