Chelsea’s interest in signing Rayo Vallecano full back Pep Chavarria continues. While there is still a gap in valuation between the two clubs, a deal is expected to be done pretty soon.
It’s an interesting departure from our transfer “model” of recent years, which has seen us target almost exclusively young players with room to increase their value. Chavarria is 28.
The explanation is that Xabi Alonso has requested him specially, and according to Ben Jacobs on the London is Blue podcast, that’s something we could see more of.

“We’ve already seen this window that when Alonso recommends a player, Chelsea’s recruitment team, as with Palestra and Chavarría, are trying to move quite quickly and decisively to back their manager and have that manager have a lot more of a driving force behind some of these deals,” Jacobs said.
“This might be the summer where there’s much more fingerprints on who comes in from the manager.”
That will make fans happy – they have a top coach now, and want to see him backed as much as possible by those in charge of transfers.
