This afternoon turned dramatic with the announcement of Enzo Maresca as the new Man City boss.
It’s been known he was the chosen man to take over from Pep Guardiola for months – the difficulty has been working out a deal with Chelsea. Maresca resigned from the club at the end of December, but they weren’t letting him walk for free. They wanted compensation, and it sounds like they’ve got it.
Maresca releases apology; Chelsea cash in compensation
According to Ben Jacobs, the settlement will amount to £17m from Manchester City alone – and they will also get a “separate settlement” from Maresca himself:
“I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish,” he said in a statement on social media.
“The decision was only mine,” he added, in an attempt to play down the accusations of “tapping up” by his new employers. Man City were keen to avoid any further legal problems, and Chelsea have used that to their advantage here.
