Antonio Conte has admitted that he could be sacked by Chelsea even if he wins the FA Cup final later this evening.
The 2016/17 Premier League champions missed out on securing the traditional double after being defeated by Arsenal at Wembley last season. Having finished fifth, there’s no double up for grabs here, but avoiding finishing the season without a trophy could be even more valuable.
Conte has never won a domestic trophy in his entire managerial career. This is the chance for him to make a statement to the Chelsea board and the footballing world that he is still one of the best managers out there, this season has merely been a bump in the road.
Regardless, winning the trophy will not ensure Conte’s survival as Chelsea manager – he recognises this. As is the nature of this football club, you can never get too comfortable in the hot-seat (especially having missed out on Champions League qualification).
Conte is quoted by Sky Sports speaking as openly as ever about his future in SW6:
“There are other people to judge your work, to judge the season, I don’t think I’d be the right person to say: ‘OK, if we win I plan this situation’, or ‘if we don’t win, I plan another situation.”
“I’m not interested in this. I’m interested in winning the final. This is the most important thing for me, for my players.”
“It’s right to separate the two things because, otherwise, if you don’t win it means you didn’t work very well.”
“Sometimes you can win but the club decides to sack you anyway because they have a reason to do this.”
Do you think Conte has a future at Chelsea if we defeat Manchester United and win the FA Cup this afternoon, Blues? Let us know in the comments.
