Diego Costa insists he was not at fault for the controversy surrounding his departure from Chelsea in the summer, The Daily Mail reports.

The tension between Costa and Blues head coach Antonio Conte led to the striker temporarily heading back to Brazil in pre-season.

The extravaganza finally came to an end when the 29-year-old returned to Atletico Madrid in a £57m deal.

When speaking in the build-up to Spain’s upcoming international friendly against Germany, Costa is quoted by The Daily Mail revealing he’s not to blame for leaving the club on a bad note.

“It is very clear that it was not my fault that I was in Brazil. We all know what happened there but I’m back now and I want to do my best.”

Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa will be going head to head in hopes to secure a spot in Spain’s World Cup squad.

Costa’s road to recovery in hopes to return to the national team fold looked bleak at the start of this season. However, the recent performances that the combative centre-forward has shown have earned him a call up to Julen Lopetegui’s side.

Alvaro Morata’s form in the past few months have also aided Costa’s hopes of representing Spain with the two battling for a place in the nation’s World Cup squad.
