Three players Chelsea could sign this month to save our slumping season

We’re already halfway through the January transfer window, but you get the feeling that Chelsea’s winter business is only just getting started.

Ross Barkley signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Premier League champions after completing his move from Everton – but there has been little more activity, which seems absurd.

The title will be heading to Manchester, that has been clear for a while now, but we are still in three cup competitions, with a squad which does not appear to be equipped to compete in them.

There is still plenty of work to done, and plenty of time to do it. Here’s three signings that Chelsea could make before the end of the transfer window that could save our season.

Alexis Sanchez

The BBC reported on Monday morning that Manchester United are favourites to sign Arsenal attacker Alexis Sanchez. The report claims that Manchester City are thought to be viewed as Sanchez’s ideal destination, but he is more likely to make the switch to the other side of the city.

Bizarrely, there is no mention of any Chelsea interest. Sanchez is one of the best wingers in the world and one of the best players in the Premier League. He would take our attack to the next level, yet we do not appear to have any desire to bring him in.

Chelsea ought to look at hijacking this deal and sign Sanchez. The BBC report that the asking price is ‘just’ £35M, which is an affordable figure for a player of his quality. The prospect of him lining up in attack alongside Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata is utterly mouthwatering.

Chelsea signed both Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater in the summer transfer window, but neither have proven themselves to be worthy partners for N’Golo Kante. If Antonio Conte intends to continue to use a 3-5-2 system, he should look to sign a player that further compliments the Frenchman, as well as midfield mastermind Cesc Fabregas.

Nainggolan is that player. In recent seasons his dominant midfield performances have elevated him to the very top of the football world. Signing him would be a real statement, and our midfield would be comparable to the powerhouse that was the foundation of our success in the 2009/10 campaign.

Mario Balotelli

Don’t click off the page just yet, there’s plenty of logic behind this suggestion. Balotelli showed immense quality during his younger years at both Inter Milan and Manchester City. He was once considered one of the most promising young strikers in the world. However, with his tender age came immaturity – he was extremely problematic.

Now 27-years-old, Balotelli appears to have grown up a bit. He looks settled at Nice, scoring 25 times in 37 league appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit. Naturally, we ought to upset the equilibrium and look to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Morata is struggling, and Conte does not appear to fully trust Michy Batshuayi. Balotelli could be exactly what we need to inject some life back into the squad. One thing’s for sure, it wouldn’t be boring!
