Chelsea target Dries Mertens has signed a contract extension with Napoli, but that doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of him moving to Stamford Bridge in the future, report The Sun.
The Sun note that Mertens has been rewarded for a stellar season with a new contract that will run until 2020, which ordinarily would deter any potential suitors.
However, The Sun report that the Belgium international’s new deal includes a £26.5million release clause which will be active for all foreign clubs as of 2018.
This will undoubtedly give Antonio Conte major encouragement if, as The Sun believe, he is interested in drafting Mertens into his title-winning squad.
For the time being, Conte will have to look elsewhere in his pursuit of attacking reinforcements, but he may well return in 2018 to sign the 27-goal maestro on the cheap.
If Chelsea do decide to move for Mertens, The Sun report that we will face competition from Premier League counterparts Manchester United.
