Chelsea could be set for a busy January transfer window.
On the surface of it, the Blues followed up their title triumph with a major summer splash, but in truth all we did was fill the voids left by player sales.
John Terry and Nathan Ake departed, Antonio Rudiger replaced them. Nemanja Matic swapped the Chelsea for Manchester United, and Tiemoue Bakayoko plugged the hole. Alvaro Morata is proving to be a shrewd acquisition, but he has merely inherited the goal-scoring burden from Diego Costa.
Chelsea’s squad remains a thin one and there is a dire need for further reinforcements. Antonio Conte appears to hold the same opinion.
The Italian is quoted by the Daily Mail urging the Chelsea board to back him in the transfer market in January in order to keep pace with Premier League leaders Manchester City:
“We must be worried because if we want to compete with Manchester City we have to work and make the best decisions in the market.”
Following the departure of technical director Michael Emenalo, it will be intriguing to see if there is any change of strategy in the upcoming transfer windows. Only time will tell…
