Chelsea have a tough run of games coming up and it might force Thomas Tuchel to revise his current 3-4-2-1 formation, that is currently working well.
It is the ideal formation to setup and break down stubborn low block defences, and we have seen it work very well under these circumstances.
Chelsea have colossal Inter Milan defender ‘high’ on their list of summer targets, read more here.
With the wing backs and the 3 attackers, it allows for an attacking overload, and we have even seen the two deep lying play makers join the attack as well as the centre backs. This creates the numbers needed to get through a stubborn defence.
However, the few times we have seen it struggle so far is up against teams who press very high and fast, and Tuchel has even changed tactics in-game on a couple of occasions and changed the formation to a 4 at the back, and I think this will be the way forward against sides like Manchester City, Leeds United, and Liverpool etc.
Any team that operates with a constant high press, I would be a little concerned about using this formation. Tuchel is a tactical genius though, and I’d fully expect him to be ahead of the curve and changing things up depending on the opponent.
He will probably use a 4-3-3 against some of the tougher teams, which gives that extra stability the the defence. The interesting thing is whether he will use Jorginho alone in that holding role to play out, or N’Golo Kante for his defensive attributes and energy.
Or will he even change the formation at all and just look to adapt his current setup?
It will be very interesting to see over the next 4 or 5 matches – Chelsea have Southampton, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Everton, and Leeds United!
