How Chelsea could line up in a back four next season

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has come in and stuck with his trusted three at the back formation, which has actually given Chelsea some defensive solidity, and given them a compact formation that is fluid and can be good for attacking with numbers, as well as switching to a defensive containment if needed.

However, there are some thoughts that Tuchel will be switching to a back four next season perhaps if he manages to land one or two of his own targets.

An adaptation of a 4-2-3-1 is a possibility, or a 4-4-2 that rotates and changes during the games. I believe he will be looking to make more use of our actual wingers and using an attack with width as well as through the middle.

Basing on who Chelsea have in the squad right now, here are a few potential line ups that Tuchel could use with four at the back.

(4-2-3-1) – Mendy, James, Silva, Christensen, Chilwell. Kante, Kovacic. Pulisic, Mount, Hudson-Odoi. Havertz.

This would allow for Mount to play up close alongside the striker and it will often have a look of being a 4-4-2 formation when we have the ball, but Mount will drop into the 10 when we don’t have the ball, and he will also interchange a lot with Havertz.

(4-3-3) – Mendy, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Silva, Chilwell. Jorginho, Kante, Mount. Pulisic, Ziyech, Havertz.

This is also a formation that Tuchel has used before, but I’m not sure sure we would play this without a more traditional style defensive midfielder.

(4-4-2) – Mendy, James, Silva, Christensen, Chilwell. Hudson-Odoi, Kante, Mount, Pulisic. Havertz, Werner.

This would be a more traditional 4-4-2 but it will also see interchanges and different shapes during the game depending on the flow of the play.

There are a lot more adaptations that he can use as well, but a lot will depend on who they sign or sell this summer.
