Opinion: Kepa proving he is ready to step up for Chelsea in Mendy’s absence

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has had a turmoil time during his Chelsea career so far.

After becoming their most expensive player at the time, he has always had his transfer fee hanging over his head and the Spanish international has struggled with confidence and form as a result.

Frank Lampard was looking to loan or sell Kepa when he was in charge and they of course bought Edouard Mendy in to take the number one spot. Even now you see rumours of Kepa leaving and we expect to hear a lot more on that in the coming weeks/months.

However, right now, the Chelsea stopper is growing in confidence once again and is showing the kind of form that made Chelsea spend £70m odd on him not so long ago, and he will soon be getting his chance to be the number one keeper, for a short time at least.

That is because Mendy will be off with Senegal in the new year representing them in the African Cup of Nations and Chelsea will be without him for at least four weeks.

Kepa will step up as next in line and his recent form has already proven to me that he is ready for it. Against Brentford this week he literally kept Chelsea in the game with three top draw saves from close range in the first half that would have seen the European Champions gunned down at least 2-0 at half time.

Just look at the difference in form here, he is making many more saves and winning his team more points than he was during his rut, that he has now stepped out of.

Chelsea will badly need him to step up in the new year and I have no doubts that he will. His confidence is back and he looks like he is enjoying himself out there again.

The best thing about Kepa has been his attitude, he hasn’t once moaned about losing his number one spot and not playing much, he has just been professional, worked hard, and stepped up when we needed him so absolute credit to him for that and I really hope he continues to show this good form going forward whatever happens in the future.
