Opinion: Having a Chelsea fan as the new owner would be a good move

Chelsea’s ownership rumours continue as we see more and more names linked with being interested in buying the club from Roman Abramovich who announced he was selling up last week.

It’s been a crazy rollercoaster ride since then and we have heard all sorts of names mentioned as wanting to become the new owners. There are many potential American buyers linked and many believe that is the most likely outcome.

However, we have been reliably linked with two UK businessmen this week, both are long-time Chelsea fans, and for me, this is the way we should go.

Nick Candy, a UK property developer, and Jamie Reuben, who is ironically currently a part-owner of Newcastle United, are both reportedly keen on buying Chelsea and are both Blues fans.

I get the negatives around this and the fact that some say that the passion they have for their clubs could cloud their judgements and similar claims like that. But for me I can’t see that. I can only see positives. These are businessmen first and foremost so despite it being the club they support, Chelsea WILL essentially be a business first to them and they will need to be professional whilst running club operations, I think that goes without saying and that won’t be an issue.

The most important thing though is that they will genuinely care about the future of Chelsea FC, and they will have a genuine passion for making sure it is a success and that the clubs’ best interests are kept at heart, and the fans will be listened to. How many other of these linked potential new owners can you say would truly do that?

I think that would be the ultimate outcome, having a billionaire in charge who is used to running a successful business and absolutely loves the club and has been supporting them since a kid. What more do you want?

Candy doesn’t have a huge net worth and would need a consortium, but Reuben, although he would have to sell his shares in Newcastle first, has a reported family net worth of £21.5bn, which would be a very safe start to buy Chelsea with.

It’s interesting times and I get the arguments, but for me, having a Chelsea fan as our next owner should be the priority as long as everything else checks in and they have the wealth to do it.

Candy and Reuben together? Who says no?

Really ironic that Candy made most of his money selling overpriced properties to Russians so they could “wash” their dirty money.
