There are a lot of questions about what Xabi Alonso has planned for his first weeks in charge at Chelsea, including in goal.

Chelsea start their life under new manager Xabi Alonso today, and it will be fascinating to see how things shake out in his early days in charge.
It’s already clear from some of their transfer business that they’ve given him a lot of power, and it will be interesting to see whether that extends to the goalkeeper department too. James Savundra’s piece for Sky Sports had a lot of thoughts about whether the new coach could persuade the Blues into a change of course.
Alonso could be the man to persuade Chelsea to spend big on “world class shot stopper”

“Robert Sanchez has had his moments in a Chelsea shirt but has failed to fully convince. Belgian keeper Mike Penders is set to add to the goalkeeping group this summer, having spent last season on loan at Strasbourg. With Filip Jorgensen set to leave, Penders and Sanchez could be set to battle for the spot between the sticks,” Savunda wrote.
He also noted that a year ago, the Blues had considered a top tier option before backing off. Could Alonso be the one to make them try that idea again?
“The club targeted AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan last summer before being put off by the figures demanded by the Serie A club. Alonso must determine whether he’s happy to settle for the existing options or whether now is the time to prioritise securing a world-class shot stopper.”
In other news…
Alonso starts work today, and he will be very glad that he is able to work with Cole Palmer right from day one.
Chelsea have a deal almost done in the form of Pep Chavarria’s transfer from Rayo Vallecano to Stamford Bridge.
