Now here’s some interesting news…
Roman Abramovich wanted David Luiz to be named Chelsea captain following the departure of John Terry – not Gary Cahill, according to Ian McGarry, as reported by the Daily Star.
Luiz does have natural leadership qualities and will undoubtedly have been considered to take the armband when Terry left following the expiration of his contract.
However, after Cahill led Chelsea to the Premier League title in the 2016/17 campaign, he was the natural successor to compatriot Terry.
The England international may not, though, have been Abramovich’s first-choice. Ian McGarry is quoted by the Daily Star suggesting that the Chelsea owner saw Luiz as the ideal candidate to become the club’s skipper:
“He’s loved by the owner of the club who saw him as the long-term successor to John Terry as captain of the club.”
“And the fact Gary Cahill remains as captain instead of Luiz is still the matter of debate in Roman Abramovich’ box every second weekend when they play at home.”
Neither Cahill or Luiz the right choice
Neither Cahill or Luiz are long-term options. Terry was given the armband at a young age, and thrived. We ought to appoint someone like Andreas Christensen as captain, someone who will likely be here for years to come and could grow into the role.
Unfortunately, this club is short-minded, hence Cahill’s appointment as captain.
