Gareth Southgate hails ‘exceptional’ Mason Mount

Mason Mount has been in the press for all the right reasons after showing in fantastic displays against San Marino and Albania in England’s first two matches of the World Cup qualifying stage.

He almost beat a Xavi record in the first match and then scored a wonderful goal in the second.

The 22-year-old was Frank Lampard’s favourite during his time at Derby and then Chelsea. And since the club legend’s dismissal from the helm, Tuchel has continued to star the talented attacker without fail since taking over.

Now, England boss Gareth Southgate has voiced his opinion on Mount, after the Three Lions strode to victory over Albania in Tirana.

In his post-match press conference (via Eurosport), Southgate said:

“He is a great player, but I was saying this in the autumn. I suppose now that Thomas Tuchel picks him, everybody will agree. When it was Frank, it doesn’t count for some reason.

The manager went on to praise the ‘exceptional’ player.

“He is an exceptional player. He finds space intelligently, he manipulates the ball very well, he creates chances and he can score goals. I thought his performance was excellent tonight,” he said

Mount became the first Chelsea player to score or assist in three consecutive England appearances since Frank Lampard in 2013.
