Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham was forced off against Newcastle United just 20 minutes into the match, on account of Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles’ challenge which saw the English defender plunge into a scissor tackle.
The challenge on Abraham left Thomas Tuchel fuming as he called it ‘reckless’. The tackle didn’t invite any kind of reaction from referee Peter Bankes.
Speaking after the match, in quotes picked by chelseafc.com, Tuchel said:
“There’s no update yet on Tammy, but we needed to take him off after a hard tackle. So we are worried, but there’s no news of him. We had the feeling it was a reckless tackle.
Lascelles played the ball, yes, but for me it’s too much of a risk to an injury to the opponent. And because of that for me it’s a foul.”
Lascelles did win the ball after Abraham went in pursuit of a through ball, but it came at the price of inflicting injury.
Abraham’s ankle injury news will come as a boost for Olivier Giroud and Timo Werner who are likely regain their place in the first eleven, starting with next week’s encounter against Southampton.
Werner got back to scoring ways after netting his first goal in 14 appearances for Chelsea, since scoring last November against Sheffield United.
However, Tammy Abraham will be the disappointed one after missing out on the opportunity to impress Tuchel, who handed him a start against Newcastle United after an impressive showing against Barnsley in the FA Cup. It remains to be seen how long the striker is going to sit out.
