Jorginho’s presence in the Chelsea line-up under Tuchel has been constant, with him missing only one match across the eight under the German’s guidance. He has been a sure-stay in the holding central midfield role alongside the talented and dynamic Mateo Kovacic.
With N’Golo Kante sitting out most of the matches under Tuchel due to fitness concerns, the duo’s showing in the centre-half has been instrumental in Chelsea’s unbeaten run of form. The two have started all but one Premier League match together, against Southampton.

Speaking ahead of the Manchester United clash to chelseafc.com, Jorginho praised his partnership with Kovacic, saying they always have each other’s backs in any given situation –
“I have a very good relationship with him because we think the same way about football, we understand each other. We know what we want to do, what each other wants to do, so I find it quite easy playing with him because we think the same way.
We know who needs to be in that position in that moment so we leave space for each other in the right moment. We cover each other’s backs, we understand when we need to be close to each other and when we don’t.”
The duo have controlled recent matches with relative ease, closing down spaces and restricting opponents’ midfield to a no-show. Speaking of which, Jorginho said –
“That’s what I was saying when I said we understand each other and think the same way, we understand the right moment to close the space or find a one-two or just to give space for him to drive the ball, because he has the ability to do that. I know when he needs that space to drive forward or when he’s a bit in trouble and needs help.”
With Kante back in contention for a starting spot, it remains to be seen how Tuchel will line-up his set of three skilful central midfielders, each of who possess great abilities to dictate proceedings in midfield.
