Mason Mount put in another class act with an impressive showing from the midfield against a stern but wasteful Atletico side who had zero shots on target. Although it was a spectacular Olivier Giroud goal that stole the victory, Mount was arguably Chelsea’s best player on the pitch.
He attempted five dribbles throughout the match and succeeded on completing three of them (whoscored.com), one of which was a sublime piece of skill. A testament to his technique on the ball and creativity in tight spaces.
Mount intercepted a sloppy header from Stefan Savic inside his own half, shrugging off Marcos Llorente with ease. The 22-year-old then went on to dribble past two sliding tackles, the first from Koke and the next by Llorente himself, painting a picture of a footballer in his prime.
Mount controlled the ball so well that it allowed him to open up the whole of Atletico’s half to himself. What ensued was an accurate defense-carving through ball that found the feet of German forward Timo Werner, who was wasteful in converting an elegant move started by the talented Mount.
Mount’s ability at such a young age is sign of a bright future ahead for the club in midfield.
