The end of June saw the end of many players contractual agreements with their clubs, and many more became free agents.
One of those was Willy Caballero for Chelsea, with the veteran goalkeeper deciding to move on to pastures new, and I’m not even sure whether Chelsea had a new offer on the table or not.
But what this does now mean is that Chelsea could end up needing to sign two new goalkeepers this summer, depending on what happens to the future of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
This is of course unless they decide to use a youth goalkeeper as a third choice, but as we have seen with Chelsea recently they prefer to use an experienced keeper as a third option. And they are usually home grown so as not to have to use a foreign space up in the main squad.
Kepa has been linked with a move away this summer, and you get the feeling that he really needs that in order to have any chance of playing for Spain again.
So if this does happen, Chelsea will need to replace him with a competent number two to backup Edouard Mendy, especially with him also being away at the African Cup of Nations for a short time this season.
Then, they will need a Caballero replacement, and as I reported on my own website, one option being explored their is Wayne Hennessey, who became a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace last month.
Remember Rob Green? I’d expect him to be that kind of signing if he does arrive.
Other than that, there have been other names linked for a second choice, but interestingly enough one of them, Sergio Romero, has also just become a free agent after not renewing with Manchester United, which I also wrote about on my own site here.
Certainly a developing situation to keep an eye on.
