The reports today seem to be bringing back our story from January regarding Chelsea opening talks with AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
As I wrote at the time for Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, Donnarumma was offered a contract by Chelsea that will come in to play this summer, when his deal at Milan runs out.
As of yet, as far as we know the offer is still on the table, but Milan are also trying to improve their offer to keep him at the club, which to be honest is essentially what I see happening.
But our friend Dean Jones today has reported Chelsea’s clear interest in signing a new goalkeeper in his Eurosport column, and mentions Donnarumma.
He also confirms the club are still looking to sell Kepa Arrizabalaga this summer.
Now despite Edouard Mendy looking relatively solid so far this season and is largely keeping clean sheets, I am 100% behind Chelsea moving for a top class keeper like Donnarumma, or Jan Oblak, who was wanted by Frank Lampard last summer over Mendy.
If Kepa goes as expected, there is a space for someone to either come in and back Mendy up, or compete with him for the number one spot.
Although I rate Mendy, I still hold some concerns over his footwork and he does seem prone to unforced errors at times.
I think Chelsea simply must look to bring in a world class keeper this summer.
