The Premier League today held a meeting with all 20 of it’s clubs to discuss what they would do going forward with Covid-19 cases rising.
The decision is that they will be continuing for now, which of course is bad news for Chelsea who, as things stand at the time of writing, have 7 confirmed positive Covid-19 cases in the camp.
So far Chelsea have decided not to use any of their academy players, however, that could soon change now after today’s meeting and a reminder of the rules.
As you can see below, the Premier League will not consider cancelling a game unless a club cannot field at least 13 players and 1 goalkeeper in total, but this does include the use of U21s who have had experience of the Premier League of the EFL.
As crazy as it is to think fixtures are going ahead, Chelsea could now soon be turning to their academy to bring players in to train with them in case they need to fill out the squad.
It’s a fast changing situation of course, but if the league feel that Chelsea have enough including the U21s to play the fixture, then it looks like they will have to do just that.
It’s not ideal at all, but you can also look at it being a great opportunity for some of the young talents to come in and help the senior team and play under Thomas Tuchel, which will be a fantastic experience for them and a chance for them to show us all what they can do.
Let’s see what happens…
