Opinion: Chelsea signing a striker will get best out of Timo Werner

It looks fairly clear now that Chelsea are going all-out to sign a new top class striker.

All the reports suggest that the main priority is Erling Haaland of Dortmund, or Romelu Lukaku of Inter Milan, as The Telegraph write today.

Could Chelsea look to do a swap deal involving Tammy Abraham and Declan Rice? Read my latest here and find out!

This paints a clear picture of the type of striker they are looking to bring in. A real old-fashioned type centre forward who can do it all.

When describing different types of strikers, Chelsea’s current frontman Timo Werner cannot be placed in the same category as the two aforementioned players, and this is why I believe that this type of centre forward coming in will actually help Werner, rather than hinder his chances and form.

Werner plays best as a second striker, playing off a traditional number 9 type forward. Playing alongside someone like Haaland will give him a lot of freedom to do what he does best, dropping deeper and wider in order to setup and dart on the counter attack. Or using his pace to run in off the last man, whilst the defenders are concerned about the intelligent movement of a Haaland or Lukaku instead.

It could be a real recipe for success for Chelsea to use two up top, especially when you consider the fact that Kai Havertz can also shine in one of those roles, and we will need plenty of rotation.

Of course competition up top can often throw some players off, but for others it can be a blessing in disguise, and I believe that it will be for Werner.

It will also take the burden of goal-scoring away from him a little. We’d still expect goals from him, as we know that’s what he brings, but the pressure would be off a little with another goal scorer alongside him.

I believe Chelsea also sees this, and this is why they are after such a certain type of striker this summer.
