Opinion: Colossal Chelsea captain maturing like a fine wine

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta is continuing to prove time and time again that not only is he still good enough to be playing for the European Champions, but he is actually an essential cog in their motor.

Many people have had their doubts over the Blues captain over the last year or two, but his performance against Arsenal at the weekend showed once again that he is doing nothing else than maturing like a fine wine.

There was a moment in the Arsenal game where Azpilicueta was the epitome of this team, he did his very best John Terry impression and made an incredible last ditch tackle stopping Arsenal scoring from a clear chance on goal. This is what he brings you as well as his quality, he brings you desire, heart, passion, leadership, and a super strong never give up mentality. These are the kind of players that win matches as much as the flair players like Lionel Messi. These are the unsung heroes that put their bodies on the line week in and week out to make sure their team wins matches. Azpilicueta is a winner, and he has grown in stature and confidence the longer he has had the Chelsea captain’s armband.

There was moments in his early captaincy days when you wondered whether he had the mentality to lead the team, and he often went missing when we needed him to stand up and be counted. But it didn’t take long for him to grow in to and perfect the role, and he has once again proven his importance to Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel.

I think he could slowly start to see his game time decrease slightly in the coming year, and there are doubts over his immediate future with one-year left on his deal, but make no mistake when he finally does depart Chelsea, he has earned the title of a true club legend alongside the greats such as Terry and Frank Lampard.

He is the type of player that Tuchel loves, he leaves everything out on the pitch and he is the best role model for the younger players to look up top. He was one of Chelsea’s best players on the pitch vs Arsenal, and I would not expect it to be the last time I say that this season.
