Yesterday bought up some more questions though, as Chelsea struggled to deal with such a high and intense press from Barnsley, yes a team that is 13th place in the Championship – which is absolute credit to them.
Chelsea’s back three were struggling to play out, and in all honesty Chelsea were missing the possession controllers Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic.
The formation was switched to a 4-3-3 at half time and they looked a bit better.
However, one of the better players on the pitch was Billy Gilmour, proving once again that he has got what it takes to start as a regular in this team.
If we play a formation with a double pivot, I genuinely believe that Gilmour and Kovacic are our best options. Jorginho is class at playing the ball out and making it tick from deep. But Gilmour also does this, but has that added extra of speed and energy for days, as well as being good defensively.
For Kante, in a deep role his defensive attributes are good, but he shy’s away from receiving possession in tight areas when under pressure and doesn’t quite do enough for me.
This is why I think Kovacic and Gilmour brings you the perfect balance and the most amount of intensity to that all important pivot.
In reality Jorginho will be the main guy alongside Kovacic for now, but Gilmour is fast becoming a real nuisance to his spot.
