Opinion: It’s decision time for many fringe and youth players as some give Tuchel a headache

We have hit that time in pre-season where Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea together as a club, will start to make final decisions on a number of players in the squad.

As more players start returning from their holidays after performing in the Euros this summer, Tuchel’s squad is just getting bigger and bigger, and will desperately need thinning out as a point of priority.

He and his coaches need to soon be working with the group who he has decided to take into the season with him, so it is important that the group is soon set in stone, building a rapport, and learning Tuchel’s setup/tactical instructions.

I am pretty sure that some of these players might be giving Tuchel a headache as well, I’m sure he, and some of us, were not expecting so many of them to be knocking so hard on his door for a place in the squad this season.

Obviously he needs to cut it right down to 25 soon, so hardly any of these fringe and youth players will be able to be included, which is why it makes it so difficult that so many of them have been training and performing so well in pre-season.

Even Danny Drinkwater is training well and he had an excellent first half against Bournemouth this week. No, this isn’t me saying he needs to be considered in the squad, that ship sailed a while ago for me. But, it is an example of how we are seeing some surprise performances and training from certain players.

Lewis Baker is another, who was fantastic as the main centre back in the middle against Bournemouth, and there are also decisions needed to be finalised on the likes of Dujon Sterling, Trevoh Chalobah, Ross Barkley, Conor Gallagher, Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek just to name a few. These are all players who would like to think they can be in Tuchel’s squad this season.

And if they’re not, then decisions on their immediate futures must be taken over the next week or so, so we can get a settled squad going into the season in some weeks time.

Chelsea still have a lot of potential outgoing loan and permanent deals to sort out, they are in for a very busy few weeks and that is even without talking about the potential arrivals we are still expecting!

as far as I can see there are 3 and a half positions depending on which left back gets sold) : right w/back; mid fielder and 3rd striker (given we are going to sign one) For me these positions/players are Sterling, Ruben and Broja
