For Italian supporters, seeing Jorginho boss the midfield in the Euros is nothing new for them. In fact, I know many Italian Chelsea fans who have never quite been able to grasp why Jorginho gets so much criticism from some Chelsea fans.
As an English Chelsea fan, I can try and explain why some don’t rate him, but at the end of the day it’s surely impossible not to see what a classy and technically excellent player he is?
He has certainly not been in great form his entire Chelsea career that is for sure, and some criticisms have been absolutely correct. People see him as being too slow and not athletic enough, and I can totally understand these criticisms. He’s never been fast, but he has a fast brain.
But when he is on form, there aren’t many better defensive midfielders, or deep-lying player makers if you prefer, than Jorginho. He has shown this time and time again on the international stage, and he is showing this again for Italy. He is a real leader for them, and he has been for Chelsea at times as well.
When he is really up for it, he is tough, commanding, good in the tackle, reads the game well, and actually brings a lot of stability to the midfield as well as his vision, good passing skills, and excellent technique.
I think the issue for some Chelsea fans is his inconsistency, and when he is not totally on it, he has failed to provide any real protection in the middle and has often fallen apart when things go against him. But then which Chelsea players have not done this over the last few seasons? This has been a collective issue.
Why some people cannot try to view these things with balance is beyond me. I’ve criticised Jorginho at times, as I have with all our players, it is your right as a fan to voice these views. But I’ve never thought he is a bad player, and I have always been able to see his strengths and exactly what he does bring when he is on the pitch.
As I said, when he is playing with confidence and in good form, and especially for Italy and even Chelsea in the second half of this season, there really aren’t many better than him in there at doing what he does.
